According to the author’s idea, the action of the picture would unfold in an alternative feudal Japan, and the project was directed by Akira Kurosawa (“Rashomon”, “Seven Samurai”).
In fact, history has come full circle: when working on the Star Wars universe, George Lucas was inspired by the films of Kurosawa (among many other things, of course). This was reflected in separate plots and homages in the form of almost identical scenes.
