How to wash soot from hands, clothes, dishes and other surfaces

What is important to know

Soot consists of brittle, easily crumbling coal particles. It may contain alkali (it was not for nothing that soap was made from ash in ancient times), fatty acid residues, and resinous substances. All this turns the soot into an extremely corrosive substance, which is easily smeared when you try to wipe it with a rag. Don’t do it. To effectively get rid of soot, first take a look at the surface you want to clean. Each needs its own approach.
