Is it possible to change eye color

What determines eye color

The colored part of the eye is called the iris, or iris. It surrounds the pupil and contains a pigment that helps control the amount of light entering the eye.

The color of this pigment is the color of the eyes. It is determined by the genes from the parents. Moreover, it was previously believed that if mom and dad, for example, have blue eyes, then the child will never have brown. But now it is known that everything is a little more complicated, so it is not always possible to predict the color of the eyes of a future baby.

Is it possible to change eye color

Yes, even forever. But it’s not always safe.

How to permanently change eye color

There are operations that allow you to change the color of the eyes forever. To do this, a silicone implant of the desired shade is placed in front of your own iris. But it turned out that this operation is extremely dangerous for the eyesight. It often leads to complications such as:

  • decreased vision or blindness;
  • increased intraocular pressure, glaucoma and, in the long term, also loss of vision;
  • cataract , that is, clouding of the normal transparent lens;
  • damage to the cornea covering the eye, in severe cases, a transplant is required;
  • inflammation of the iris and structures around it, which leads to pain, blurred vision and watery eyes.

Therefore, in 2014, the US Food and Drug Administration banned this procedure. It is also impossible to do it in Russia, but in other countries such operations are still carried out.

Anyone considering this operation should ask themselves: what is more important – my eye color or my vision? Color change is not the only thing that is permanent in this procedure. It may well ruin your eyesight for life.

A non-invasive laser procedure that can lighten dark eyes is being tested. It promises to be safer, but has not yet been certified in its home country, in the US, so it is only available in some Latin American countries.

How to change eye color safely

The only safe way to change eye color is to use contact lenses recommended by an ophthalmologist. He will measure the cornea to find the size, tell you about the correct handling of them and write a prescription.

Select only those models that are registered as a medical device. Decorative lenses from marketplaces have not been tested for safety of use: they can provoke erosions and ulcers on the cornea and infections that can lead to blindness.
