Quite progressive for its time, the series explores teenage sexuality and answers questions that concern the vast majority of teenagers: for example, how to use a condom, choose the first bra , or cope with complexes.

2. Daria

  • United States, 1997–2002.
  • Sitcom, satire.
  • Duration: 5 seasons.

The series tells about the cynical schoolgirl Daria Morgendorffer, who lives with her parents and younger sister in the small town of Lawndale. The only friend of Daria is the artist Jane Lane, who has a similar view of the world. Among their superficial and not the smartest classmates, Daria and Jane are perhaps the only ones who care about self-determination.

The show scathingly pokes fun at 1990s pop culture stereotypes, including teenage conformity, the general obsession with fashion, the absolute superiority of sports over intelligence and creativity.

3. Hooligans and nerds

Freaks and Geeks

The creator of “The 40 Year Old Virgin” and “Pineapple Express” Jude Apatow directed one of the best teen series. And helped him in this brilliant team of favorite actors: Seth Rogen, James Franco and Jason Segel.

4. Milkers

The series follows the life of a group of high school students from Bristol and deals with difficult topics such as sexual self-determination, family problems, mental disorders and death. Three generations of teenagers appear in “Skins”, each of which is devoted to two seasons.

The final seventh season tells about the adult life of the most beloved characters of the audience. Although “Skins” began as a biting satire on the pressing problems of teenagers, over time the project has become more of a teen drama.

5. Chorus

  • United States, 2009–2015.
  • Musical, tragicomedy, satire.
  • Duration: 6 seasons.
  • IMDb: 6.8.

The setting of the series is an ordinary American school with a stereotypical caste hierarchy of popular and losers. Spanish teacher Will Schuester starts a music club made up of nerds and misfits. But when the choir fills with the star of the football team, the local elite also joins.

Series creator Ryan Murphy dreamed of making a postmodern satirical musical. And he succeeded. The local school is nothing but a miniature model of the USA. Gender and racial issues, the problem of attitudes towards people with disabilities – in general, everything that excites modern America was reflected in Glee.

6. 13 reasons why

13 reasons why

  • United States, 2017–2020.

After listening to the tapes, the hero learns what kind of hell high school can become and that the only thing worse than the cruelty of peers is the indifference of adults.

13 episodes of the first season fully revealed the plot of the eponymous novel by Jay Asher. However, the project was renewed for a second season, and later for two more.

Based on the classic Archie comics, Riverdale is often compared to Twin Peaks and other iconic 90s titles like Beverly Hills 90210 and Gossip Girl.

Another good teen series in Netflix ‘s vast collection of high school stories. The main characters – typical losers and nerds – will have to learn to be responsible for their actions and realize that the opinions of others should not affect self-esteem.

Shot from the series “Sex Education”

Sixteen-year-old Otis Milburn, a reserved, shy boy, goes to a normal high school. Somehow, out of the kindness of his heart, he helps the school bully Adam solve a very delicate problem.

Otis’s “ability” is noticed by the enterprising brat Maeve. Armed with the techniques of a sexologist mom, Milburn, together with Maeve, organizes an underground psychological office, where he solves the sexual problems of classmates for money.

The bed theme is far from paramount in Sex Education. The series considers sex primarily as a way to understand oneself: in three seasons, the characters manage to face many serious problems that are equally relevant for any age.
