On September 7 at the Steve Jobs Theater in California, Apple officially unveiled the iPhone 14 line of smartphones. It included four devices, among which there is no compact mini version – it was replaced by an enlarged version of the base model, called the iPhone 14 Plus. Here’s everything you need to know about what’s new.
iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus
The base iPhone 14 has a 6.1-inch display, while the iPhone 14 Plus has a 6.7-inch display. In addition to size, they differ slightly in resolution, but are otherwise identical: brightness up to 1200 nits, Dolby Vision support, TrueTone technology, contrast ratio 2000000:1.
Both smartphones retain the familiar notch with Face ID sensors and a 12-megapixel selfie camera, with the latter receiving autofocus for the first time. The overall design of the case is the same – with flat ends and a glass back panel.
For the first time in many years, new Apple smartphones remained with the old processors, albeit slightly improved – this is the A15 Bionic (5 nm), as in the iPhone 13, but with more powerful graphics (5 cores versus 4 before).
There are two rear cameras: main and wide-angle – both 12 megapixels. The first received an enlarged sensor, F / 1.5 aperture and a new matrix-shift stabilization, previously used only in Pro versions. Evaluate its capabilities will allow the new shooting mode Action Mode.
The manufacturer also notes that the camera captures light 49% better when there is a lack of lighting. And to improve such pictures allows the new technology Photonic Engine.
Both smartphones also received a satellite SOS alert, allowing you to connect to the satellite in emergency situations – without using Wi-Fi and the Internet. The user will be able to send special messages and their location to rescue services, but this will only work in some countries (for now, the USA and Canada).
In the US, the iPhone 14 will be released without a SIM card slot – users will only be able to use eSIM with the ability to switch between different operators. Versions for other countries will have a physical slot.
The base iPhone 14 will be released on September 16, while the iPhone 14 Plus will be released on October 7. The prices are as follows:
- iPhone 14: starting at $799;
- iPhone 14 Plus: Starting at $899
iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max
One of the main differences between the Pro versions of the new smartphones is the screens with a hole instead of a notch. Apple is the first to use this technology, although it has long been used by Android device manufacturers.
This central area, called the Dynamic Island, can expand to display various system or application data on the sides of the array of sensors.
The screen sizes are the same as those of the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus, but they differ in much narrower bezels and a maximum brightness of 1600 nits with a peak of 2000 nits.
The displays can also operate in Always On Display mode with a refresh rate of 1 Hz, displaying static information with minimal power consumption.
The second advantage of the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max is the brand new A16 Bionic processor. It is developed on a 5nm process and features two high-performance cores that consume 20% less power and four energy-efficient cores. They are complemented by a 16-core neuroengine and a 5-core graphics chip.
The Pro versions also received improved cameras – each has three modules with a 48 MP main sensor. The latter features new 7-element optics, f/1.78 aperture and 24mm focal length.
48 MP shots are compressed into 12 MP, like many other flagships, by combining quartets of pixels to improve image quality. But there is also a ProRAW full resolution mode with the maximum amount of source data.
The flash has also been redesigned – it has become twice as bright and now adjusts to the focal length.
12 MP wide-angle camera with 6-element optics can use for macro. And the telephoto now allows you to use not only the ×3 approximation, but also ×2 – also with maximum clarity. All cameras now capture 50% more light than last year’s Pro versions.
Separately, the cinematic shooting mode was noted, which is “created for real professionals.” It allows you to shoot in 4K/30 fps and 4K/24 fps.
All four new smartphones support automatic accident alerts, as do the new Apple Watch Series 8 and Ultra .
iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max will be available in the US starting September 16 (pre-orders September 9). Memory options up to 1TB will be available to users.
The prices are as follows:
- iPhone 14 Pro: starting at $999;
- iPhone 14 Plus: Starting at $1,099
The material is being added.
