What do green snot say in children and adults

Why snot can be green

Snot becomes so because of the substances that secrete leukocytes. These are white blood cells that protect our body from infections. They rush straight to the epicenter of the fight against microbes and either devour viruses and bacteria, or attack them with special enzymes that contain iron. It also colors the mucus green.

Treatment for bacterial and viral infections varies greatly, so people try to determine the cause from the symptoms. Including by the type of snot and the signs accompanying them.

Green thick snot

Mucus thickens if it becomes more concentrated, such as during sleep, or if enzymes increase as the disease progresses. Therefore, even by density it is impossible to determine that there are no longer viruses, but definitely bacteria.

Green snot and cough

Cough can be both a manifestation of an infection and a complication of the common cold. This is called post-nasal drip, when mucus flows from the nose into the throat, for example, during sleep. If this is the problem, the cough will pass along with the snot, and will not bother you even after they disappear.

Green snot and temperature

Temperature is also the body’s reaction to a cold. With a viral infection, the temperature should normally decrease after a couple of days. If suddenly this does not happen or it begins to grow again, it may be a bacterial infection. For example, sinusitis is an inflammation of the sinuses in the skull, most often the frontal and maxillary sinuses. In this case, most likely, the head will also hurt, there will be a feeling of pressure on the face and the state of health will worsen. In this case, you should definitely see a therapist so that he prescribes antibiotics.

Are antibiotics always needed if the snot is green

Even among some doctors, there is a myth that green snot necessarily indicates a bacterial infection that needs to be treated with antibiotics. But since a runny nose is most often caused by viruses, such medicines are useless in this case. In addition, if you drink drugs just like that, then the bacteria learn to resist them and the old remedies no longer help. So it’s best to only use them when you really need them. This may be indicated by such signs :

  • a cold lasts more than 10 days and the condition does not improve;
  • high temperature that does not go astray for several days;
  • as if it became easier, but a week later the disease worsened again: the temperature rose again, the symptoms worsened;
  • the mucus became thick and evenly white, like pus;
  • There are symptoms that cannot be relieved with over-the-counter cold remedies.

Antibiotics cannot be bought without a prescription, they are prescribed by a doctor. Therefore, with such manifestations, you will still need to make an appointment first.

How to treat green snot at home

To get rid of a runny nose, you should not take antiviral and various cold medicines. The best thing to do is:

  • Rinse your nose with saline several times a day.
  • Drink plenty of fluids.
  • Turn on a humidifier at home.
  • If necessary, use vasoconstrictor drops, but no more than three to seven days in a row and no more often than it is written in the instructions.
