How and to whom is a hair transplant done?

What is hair transplant and how does it work

A hair transplant , or transplant, is an operation during which a person’s own follicles (hair follicles) are taken and implanted elsewhere on the body. This manipulation allows you to safely restore the hairline if it has become uneven or was initially rare.

Depending on the size of the area where the hair needs to be transplanted, the doctor suggests different methods of transplantation .

  • FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) is the most popular method. For him, the doctor takes 1-4 follicles with a special microsurgical instrument. In this case, there is no need to cut the skin, suturing, which means there is less risk of complications and discomfort.
  • FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation – “transplantation of follicular units”), or Strip (from the English “flap”) . For him, the doctor will select a flap with hair with a scalpel in order to move it to the right place. The tissue sample is taken in a variety of ways . Sometimes a strip of skin is not completely separated; a small area stretches from it to the previous place, inside of which there are vessels. This improves the engraftment of the graft.

Who and where is hair transplanted

The operation is performed on men and women. The main indication for the procedure is hair loss, which can occur for various reasons. We have already talked about them in a separate article .

Most often, hair transplantation is done on the head. Some decide to transplant into the beard area if it is not thick enough or has an ugly growth line. It is also possible to implant hair follicles in the eyebrows and sideburns.

The procedure is not available to everyone. There are no serious contraindications to it, but the doctor may refuse if the patient does not have healthy hair on the occipital region or on the sides of the skull.

How much does a hair transplant cost

Trichology services, or hair treatment, are not included in the MHI , so you will have to pay for them yourself. The cost of transplantation depends on the technique used in the clinic, the size of the bald spot and the area where the follicles need to be implanted. The price of a transplant on the head is from 50 to 150 thousand rubles. It is more expensive to improve the condition of the beard and sideburns – from 60 to 300 thousand. For beautiful eyebrows, you will have to pay 50-110 thousand rubles.

Some clinics carry out a free correction a few months after the main operation.

How to prepare for a hair transplant

Serious preparation for transplantation is not needed. A person who wants to have a transplant should contact a dermatologist or trichologist. If the patient has alopecia – pathological hair loss, the doctor will determine its cause and, possibly, advise a simpler method of treatment.

Before the operation, they may offer to take a general blood test, check clotting. If there is an allergy to medications, this should also be reported to a specialist. And 2 weeks before transplantation, trichologists advise to give up smoking and alcohol.

How hair transplant is done

You do not need to go to the hospital for the operation. The procedure is done under local anesthesia, after which you can go home. Usually the transplant takes place in three stages .

Getting hair from the donor area

First, the patient is shaved off the hair on the part of the head where the follicles will be taken from. This is necessary so that the hair does not interfere with obtaining high-quality samples.

The size of the graft can be any, depending on which area it is required.

Closure of the donor zone

If surgeons perform FUE surgery, this step is skipped. In other cases, the area from which the skin flap was taken is sutured. This helps the tissues to heal without the formation of bald patches.

Transplantation of received grafts

For implantation of individual follicles, the skin is not cut. They are simply implanted with a special surgical instrument.

But in the case of using a skin flap, an incision is made in the right place or a scar is removed in which the hair will not take root. Then the edges of the tissues are sutured.

What to Expect After a Hair Transplant

Transplantation does not guarantee results immediately after the procedure. Some follicles do not take root, so a second transplant is needed after the final healing. Sometimes the transplanted hair looks unnatural. There may be more serious complications:

  • bleeding at the incision site;
  • scar formation after wounds;
  • skin inflammation and infection.

If there is pain, inflammation, or bleeding from the wound, you need to contact the doctor who performed the operation. He will prescribe medications that will help fight the problem.
